About Sugar Island Clothing

Hi! I'm Margaret, the creator, owner, designer, everything behind Sugar Island Clothing. I am so happy you're here!

My love for children's clothing began when I had my twins in 2015. Dressing them up and finding cute coordinating outfits brought me a lot of joy! In the spring of 2018 I joined Matilda Jane Clothing as a trunk keeper which furthered my love of kids fashion. During my time at MJC, I had the opportunity to work behind the scenes on a special project. I was able to meet with the designers of Matilda Jane and design a piece of clothing that would be part of a future collection. Unfortunately, the company had shut its doors before the dress went into production.

The time I spent dreaming, designing and researching for that project sparked a totally new interest for me. I had always loved children's clothing, why not make it myself? I began teaching myself to sew in the spring of 2023. I took in as much information as I could from every source! Learning how to sew involved a lot of trial and error at first. Clothing was tested with friends and family who were happy to provide helpful feedback. After researching the rules and regulations regarding children's clothing, an LLC was born.

Sugar Island Clothing officially launched in June 2023. Up until this website was created, shopping was only done at pop-up markets or via social media. I am excited to have a streamlined process, making it easier to browse & see what's available anytime! You will see ready made items on the website, along with pre-order options occasionally.

Each clothing item really is hand made by me! I do offer some curated accessories. These are items I have carefully chosen to coordinate with the clothing that I make. I try to source local, hand-made items for the accessories as well.

I believe in sourcing the best fabrics. I only want the things that feel good and will wash & wear well. Nearly all of my fabrics are printed here in the good ol' USA. I love to support small print shops, including (but not limited to): Raspberry Creek Fabrics (Utah), Carriage House Printery (Ohio), Millie & Dot (Georgia), Natural Roots Fabric (Texas), LBK Printing (Texas). My goal is also to be as sustainable as possible, using all pieces of fabric and reducing the waste. That's why you'll see one of a kind pieces, small appliques, or fun pockets!

I appreciate you being here and supporting my dream!
